I believe the primary advantages of a OSX-based Mac over a Windows computer are that there is no necessity for anti-spyware or anti-virus software due to them being near non-existent on the Apple OSX operating system and the system is usually much more reliable and difficult to unintentionally (or intentionally!) damage.
This is probably as a result of OSX's heritage as an indirect descendant of the very secure Unix type operating system. I would only advise using a Linux operating system over OSX if budget was more important than quality for your purchasing decision. Macs "Just Work" and that is the primary design philosophy. With Linux, there's lots of irregularities and inconsistencies in the way software works together. However, recent distributions such as Linux Mint and PCLinuxOS have made some steps towards correcting this. Older Apple Mac computers such as the G3 and G4 models are very cheaply available now as can be seen at Fruity Computers UK. The Apple Mac Mini Core Duo would be an excellent modern Mac for someone on a budget or otherwise.
